Last Mile Food Rescue is a Cincinnati-based nonprofit that operates on a simple thesis: hunger is a logistics problem. Since November 2020, we have rescued more than 18 million pounds of food and delivered nearly 16 million meals to neighbors in need — powered by a network of 400+ nonprofit agency partners, a dedicated volunteer corps, and a growing fleet operation.

Position Summary
The Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a strategic financial leader and trusted advisor to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee. This part-time executive role is responsible for ensuring the organization’s financial sustainability, strengthening internal controls, overseeing financial planning and compliance, and providing actionable financial insights that support the nonprofit’s mission and growth.
The Fractional CFO works closely with the organization’s accounting resources, auditors, grant managers, and leadership team to ensure sound financial management, regulatory compliance, and long-term financial health.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Financial Leadership
Financial Strategy & Planning
- Serve as the organization’s senior financial advisor and strategic partner to executive leadership and the Board.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of long-range financial plans and multi-year financial models to ensure organizational sustainability and mission fulfillment.
- Evaluate financial risks and opportunities associated with strategic initiatives, growth plans, and new program development.
Accounting Processes Ownership

Manage and oversee the relationship with the organization’s accountant or outsourced accounting provider.
- Review financial reporting processes to ensure they balance efficiency and controls effectiveness while delivering ensure timely, accurate financial information to leadership and the Board.
Cash Flow Management
- Oversee the development and maintenance of rolling cash flow forecasts.
- Monitor organizational liquidity and ensure adequate cash is available to support payroll, operations, and program delivery.
- Recommend and oversee cash management strategies, including maximizing returns on operating reserves through appropriate banking and investment vehicles.
Grant Strategy & Financial Analysis
- Assess the financial viability of prospective grants and funding opportunities.
- Ensure indirect cost allocations and overhead recovery rates are appropriately calculated and applied.
- Provide financial guidance regarding grant budgeting, pricing, and sustainability.
Board & Finance Committee Reporting
- Oversee the preparation of clear, concise financial reports, dashboards, and analyses for the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.
- Translate complex financial data into actionable insights that support governance and decision-making.
- Support Board members in understanding key financial trends, risks, and opportunities.
Revenue Diversification & Earned Income Strategy
- Evaluate the financial viability, pricing, and unit economics of new earned- revenue and fee-for-service initiatives (e.g., data and logistics services offered to partner organizations), including margin analysis and break-even thresholds.
- Advise on contract and pricing structures for paying partners, balancing cost recovery and sustainability with mission alignment and nonprofit status.
- Ensure proper accounting treatment and revenue recognition for earned income relative to contributed and restricted revenue, in accordance with LMFR modified GAAP policies.
- Support development of a blended revenue model — combining philanthropic and earned income — for Board, funder, and donor communication.
- Evaluate the financial return on investment and ongoing cost structure of technology and data infrastructure investments that underpin earned-revenue programs (e.g., proprietary dispatch, data, or logistics platforms), in coordination with the organization’s technology leadership.
2. Operational Oversight
Budget Development & Management
- Oversee the preparation of the annual budgeting process by the organization’s accounting staff in collaboration with department leaders and program managers.
- Oversee the development of operating and program budgets aligned with strategic priorities.
- Monitor budget performance and oversee variance analysis and recommendations throughout the year.
Financial Systems & Process Improvement
- Evaluate, implement, and optimize financial systems and technology solutions.
- Oversee accounting software platforms such as QuickBooks Online and the interface to supporting systems (Bloomerang and Salesforce).
- Ensure effective integration between accounting, donor management, and reporting systems, including platforms such as Salesforce and Bloomerang.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reporting capabilities, and financial controls.
Audit Review Preparation & Coordination
- Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors on review process.
- Coordinate review schedules, documentation requests, and management responses.
- Ensure a smooth annual audit process and support the achievement of an unmodified (“clean”) review opinion.
Internal Controls & Risk Management
- Design, implement, and monitor internal control policies and procedures.
- Ensure appropriate segregation of duties and fraud prevention safeguards.
- Assess organizational financial risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
3. Compliance & Grant Management
Fund Accounting
- Oversee nonprofit fund accounting practices and ensure accurate tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds.
- Ensure expenditures are properly allocated and reported according to donor and grant requirements.
Regulatory Compliance
- Oversee preparation and review of IRS Form 990 and related federal, state, and local filings.
- Ensure compliance with LMFR modified GAAP accounting standards, grant requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Support leadership in maintaining strong financial governance practices.
Grant Reporting & Administration
- Review and monitor grant budgets and expenditures.
- Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to foundations, government agencies, and other funding partners.
- Collaborate with program staff to support grant compliance and reporting requirements.
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience.
- Significant experience serving nonprofit organizations.
- Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, grant management, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience presenting financial information to Boards of Directors and Finance Committees.
- Demonstrated expertise in budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial modeling.
- Experience managing annual audits and IRS Form 990 preparation.
Preferred
- CPA, MBA, CMA, or related professional credential.
- Experience with nonprofit financial systems including QuickBooks Online.
- Experience with donor management systems such as Salesforce and Bloomerang.
- Experience advising mission-driven organizations on earned revenue, fee-for-service, or social enterprise models.
- Experience supporting organizations with government grants and foundation funding.

Time Commitment
This is a fractional executive position requiring approximately 10-20 hours per month, with flexibility based on organizational needs, budgeting cycles, audit periods, and Board meeting schedules.
Compensation
Competitive hourly or monthly retainer arrangement commensurate with experience and nonprofit financial leadership expertise.

- Assists with maintaining and organizing LMFR storage and facilities.
- Uses LMFR and other apps on personal cell phone to complete rescues and communicate throughout the day.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent (Required).
- Must be at least 18 years of age (Required).
- Must be able to pass a DOT Physical and submit to pre-employment screening (Required).
- Current driver’s license with good driving record. No moving violations within the past 12 months (Required).
- Comfortable driving or learning to drive large vans and box trucks (Required).
- Typical schedule is 8am-12pm for part time, or 8am-4:30pm for full time, with occasional Saturday or holiday shifts as needed.
- The ability to lift 30-60 pounds regularly.
- Mild to heavy physical activity involving moving large objects, operating a pallet jack and sorting through food.
